Transferring to UB: Information for College Counselors

Spring 2020 COVID-19 Special Edition

UB updates in response to COVID-19

The University at Buffalo transfer team sends a transfer counselor newsletter twice a year to our two-year college colleagues that includes academic updates and news about upcoming events. In light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to provide you with information regarding changes and accommodations for the spring 2020 semester and upcoming summer 2020 term.

In this edition, you will find information about academic policy updates, deadline extensions and virtual contact opportunities for students to connect with our staff and our academic and student services departments.

During this most unusual semester, we have seen so much resilience and optimism from you and from your students. Thank you for continuing to serve them and connect them with the opportunities they are seeking. We hope you all a safe and healthy remainder of spring 2020!

Welcome to our newest transfer team member, Jennifer Peterson!

In February, UB’s transfer team welcomed Jennifer Peterson as our new transfer admissions counselor. Jennifer comes to us from New College in Sarasota, FL, where she served as a transfer admissions coordinator. She is no stranger to Western New York, though! Jennifer attended Monroe Community College before transferring to Niagara University, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in international studies and French. She then completed her master’s in higher education administration at University at Buffalo in 2017. Please join me in giving Jennifer a warm welcome back to UB as part of our transfer admissions team. Jennifer will be covering the metro New York travel territories and can be reached at jap23@buffalo.edu or 716-645-8123.

Deposit deadline extended to June 1

The University at Buffalo has extended the deposit deadline for admitted freshmen and transfer students to Monday, June 1. The extension applies to both enrollment ($150) and housing ($300) deposits. Students can make their deposit online.

We are continuing to accept and review transfer applications on a rolling basis. Students admitted after June 1 are expected to respond within 10 days of their admission notification.

Some programs have earlier application deadlines. Please see Admission to Degree Programs for more information. Admissions consideration is on a space-available basis thereafter.

Housing updates for fall 2020

The University at Buffalo does not require students to live on campus but can accommodate transfer and non-traditional students who desire to live on campus if they submit their housing deposit by the June 1 housing deposit deadline. Housing is on a space-available basis thereafter.

Feel free to direct students to any of the following resources if they have questions about transfer housing options at University at Buffalo:

Academic policy updates for spring 2020

The University at Buffalo has updated its Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading policy for spring 2020 for current UB students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The same policy has been extended to students transferring in courses from other institutions in the spring 2020 semester on a P/F or S/U grading system. UB students who choose to convert their grades to S/U grades will be noted on their transcripts as S* or U*. Incoming students transferring spring 2020 courses to UB, whether taken as dual enrollment courses or not, under a P/F or S/U policy at their home institution will see these grades listed on their transfer credit report as “TP”/“TS” (transfer pass/satisfactory) or “TF”/“TU” (transfer fail/unsatisfactory):

  • All TP and TS grades will fulfill degree requirements the same way that the S* does for spring 2020. This applies to:
    • All incoming courses from domestic institutions.
    • Credits and grades earned in spring 2020 only.
    • Direct articulation and wildcard courses.
  • Visit the registrar’s website for information on how the S* fulfills degree requirements.

Please note: Students (current UB students and incoming transfers) in certain majors who select S/U grading for a course may not be able to count that course toward certain major or major prerequisites. The following majors are affected:

  • Nursing (Major prerequisites and requirements)
  • Occupational Therapy (Major prerequisites and requirements)
  • Accounting (Major requirements only. MGA 201 and 202 may be taken S/U.)

As always, UB accepts all credit-bearing courses from regionally accredited two- and four-year degree-granting institutions with a passing or satisfactory grade. The number of credits earned at the institution where the course was taken is the number of credits the student will transfer to UB for the course. You can check if courses have been matched to UB’s courses and requirements on TAURUS, our transfer articulation website.

Transfer work, including the SUNY GETA (General Education Transcript Addendum), may be applied toward the relevant UB Curriculum requirement(s). Transfer students will complete the UB Seminar and the UB Curriculum Capstone at UB. All other UB Curriculum requirements may be satisfied with transfer coursework where applicable. For more detailed information on how transfer coursework may apply to UB Curriculum requirements through direct articulations or SUNY GETAs (General Education Transcript Addendum), please visit UB Curriculum Transfer Articulation page.
