The French education program is an accelerated, combined degree program that that leads to a French BA and a French Education EdM in five years.

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) is home to the French program, which offers training in the spoken and written language through small, highly interactive classes. Texts, films, and special events showcase the literatures and cultures of French-speaking world regions both past and present. French students are strongly encouraged to study abroad for a summer, a semester, or a full year. There are quality affordable SUNY programs throughout France as well as in Quebec, Senegal, Morocco, and Switzerland. The coursework in the first three years provides a deep understanding of the French language and culture. Select education courses give students opportunity to experience the nuances of the teaching profession.

The graduate portion of the program will continue to develop French language competence and communicative strategies to become an effective teacher. The final year in the program includes a one-year residency that allows students to co-teach alongside an expert teacher. The opportunity to experience the inner workings of the classroom from fall setup to end-of-year grading prepares students to enter the teaching profession with expertise and confidence.

At the end of the five-year program, successful students will receive recommendation for New York State Initial and Professional Teacher Certification.
