Narrator:

Buffalo, New York. A lakefront city named the number one "city with heart" by USA Today and one of the nation's top ten arts destinations by American Style Magazine. A center for history, sports, and nightlife. Just minutes away from the wonder of Niagara Falls. And home to one of the country's premier research universities, with over 26,000 students - the University at Buffalo.

From its earliest days as a medical school - where 13th President of the United States, Millard Fillmore, served as first Chancellor - to its present day status as one of the largest and most comprehensive public universities in the northeast, UB's legacy is one of innovation.

Traditional architecture defines UB's South Campus, inhabited by the schools of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Public Health and Health Professions, and Architecture and Planning.

Just three miles away in suburban Amherst, the North Campus - covering 1,100 acres with state-of-the-art facilities - houses the university's core academic programs.

The University at Buffalo is a dynamic center of learning. Its curriculum, resources, and facilities are rated among the best in the nation and attract talented students from across the country and around the world. With students of every ethnicity, race, and background, the university can truly be considered a global village.

UB undergraduates are offered more than 100 majors and 70 minors, individualized courses of study, and choices for learning opportunities that exceed any public institution in New York or New England.

It's a university where dedicated students can shape their own academic lives and develop their potential.

Cheryl Rozario, Student, University at Buffalo:

Academically, you have an opportunity to pick out various majors and minors. Socially, you can get involved in pretty much anything you want, from student government to research positions and internships. So, I like the fact that I have a lot of options here.

Narrator:

UB's distinguished faculty members have won prestigious national and international awards - the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, and National Medal of Science among them. There are also more than 90 Excellence in Teaching award winners, the largest contingent in the State University of New York system.

Considered one of the most wired universities in America, UB delivers state-of-the-art computing capabilities everywhere on campus - including online access to over two million resource materials.

Ten on-campus libraries, holding over three million volumes, have placed UB in the top fifty of academic library systems in America.

UB's College of Arts and Sciences, with over 12,000 students enrolled across its 28 departments, is dedicated to progressive instruction and research.

The University's Center for Computational Research, one of the world's leading supercomputing sites, supports 50 research groups, 30 departments, and more than 20 companies and institutions in the Buffalo region.

The new Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics - which integrates high-end technology and biological research - defines cutting-edge.

The sleek and modern Center for the Arts houses the departments of art, media study, and theatre & dance and also serves as the cultural hub of the university, featuring productions in the performing arts.

Advanced technology partners with the arts with the university's award-winning Electronic Poetry Center on the World Wide Web, underscoring the university's commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to education.

UB's emphasis on hands-on learning combined with its extensive local and national internship network means excellent prospects for its graduates. According to a recent study, more than 90 percent of UB alumni were either working in their field of choice or enrolled in a graduate school within one year of graduation.

Evan & Adam Halstead, Students, University at Buffalo:

Adam: What I like about UB is that classes give you a good theoretical background and there are so many student clubs that give you the opportunity to do hands-on work and get practical experience.

Evan: Yeah, there are so many majors, so many people to see, and things to do that you can really be whatever you want to be.

Narrator:

Life outside of academics is also part of the lure of attending UB. The heart of campus social life is the Student Union and the Commons - offering a wide range of restaurants and services that address students' day-to-day needs.

There are more than 200 special-interest student organizations, two campus newspapers, a Distinguished Speaker Series that brings renowned leaders to campus, top-notch athletic and recreational facilities, state-of-the-art exercise and weight-training rooms, a 31,000 seat stadium, and the excitement of 20 men's and women's NCAA Division I athletic teams.

Over seven thousand students live on campus in a variety of community-like settings - from traditional residence halls to the newest complex offering apartment-style living. Residences are designed to feel like home with comfortable areas for studying, relaxing or playing. Cable TV and high-speed internet connections in every room complete the home-away-from-home picture.

Richard Aguilar, Student, University at Buffalo:

Coming from New York City, I wanted a place where I can grow independently and be able to breathe and have a sense of community. And UB fit that perfectly for me. Even though the campus is big, it's spacious and it allows me to breathe and I do have a sense of community here - I have a lot of friends and I enjoy the campus a lot.

Narrator:

As a public university, UB's reasonable tuition is in sharp contrast to the cost of a private university. And one in three incoming freshmen receive merit-based scholarships - a testament to the high-caliber of students attending UB.

Quality, opportunity, and affordability are the hallmarks of a University at Buffalo education.

Tameka Arroy, Student, University at Buffalo:

I initially chose to come to UB because I was looking for the school that offered the best education for the most affordable price. And now that I'm here, I know that I made the right decision.

Narrator:

When you add it up - an academically challenging curriculum with world-class research and teaching facilities, and an eminent faculty - students leave the University at Buffalo with a degree that commands respect and prepares them well for careers in the 21st century.
