Attractions and Nightlife

Just a 20-minute drive from UB's North Campus is Niagara Falls, one of the world's seven natural wonders.

Buffalo is well-known for its NFL team (the four-time AFC champion Buffalo Bills) and its NHL team (two-time Stanley Cup finalists, the Buffalo Sabres). Area sports-fans are also treated to a Triple-A baseball team (the Bisons), and a Major Indoor Lacrosse League (the Bandits).

Delaware Park - designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, architect of New York City's Central Park - is the recreational heart of the city: a mecca for joggers, cross-country skiers, tennis players, softball teams, and dog-walkers alike.

A short drive out of the city, Buffalonians can enjoying hiking and camping in a wide range of breathtaking natural areas, including Letchworth State Park, which boasts over 20 waterfalls, and Allegany State Park, the largest in New York State.

Kissing Bridge, Holiday Valley, and Peek'n Peak, and nearly 20 other ski resorts in the region, offer world-class downhill skiing. Nearby Ellicottville offers the quaint charm of a small ski village just an hour outside of Buffalo.

Buffalo's culinary offerings go well beyond its world-famous Buffalo wings (a Buffalo original served up at the Anchor Bar, where they debuted more than forty years ago, and at nearly every other bar and restaurant in town). The National Buffalo Wing Festival, inaugurated in 2002, now celebrates the city's culinary creation. At the annual "Taste of Buffalo," festival, held downtown every July, thousands of Buffalo residents and visitors crowd downtown streets to enjoy samples of some of the city's finest cuisine, from dozens of local restaurants.

"Taste of Buffalo" is one among several dozen annual festivals enjoyed by Buffalonians. A street festival takes place nearly every weekend from May through September, including ethnic celebrations like the Hellenic Festival in June, the international Canadian/American Friendship Festival celebrated every July, and the Allentown Art Festival, where over 500 local artists display their work to crowds of several hundred thousand.

Weekdays are just as lively in the summer as weekends are: thousands of Buffalonians of every age and walk of life throng to downtown's Lafayette Square on Thursday afternoons in the summer to enjoy free live musical entertainment at the "Thursday at the Square" series sponsored by the city.

Downtown Buffalo's nightlife is alive throughout the year, from the bright lights of the Chippewa Street "strip" to fine dining and world-class music venues
