Campus Life FAQ
Is UB in the city or the suburbs?
Both! North Campus, where most academic programs are located, is situated in suburban Amherst, N.Y. South Campus is in a residential area at the northern edge of the city of Buffalo. Adjacent to Buffalo’s medical district, UB’s growing Downtown Campus can be reached by catching the city’s Metro Rail at South Campus.
Does UB have guaranteed housing?
Accepted students who have submitted their tuition and housing deposits by May 1 are given priority consideration for on-campus housing.
Are freshmen required to live in the residence halls?
No. However, we strongly encourage new students to live on campus and experience all UB has to offer.
If I have chosen to live on campus, when will I get my room assignment? Will I know who my roommates are?
We typically send out room assignments in mid-July. With your room assignment, we also send you the names, addresses and telephone numbers of your roommates.
Can I spend the night in a dorm?
No, the Office of Admissions at UB does not offer an overnight visit program.
If I live on campus, where will I eat?
If you plan to live on campus, you’ll select one of our dining plan options and will be issued a UB Card. This is your dining service card, and it can be used in each main residence hall dining center, plus numerous other dining locations on both campuses for your convenience.
If I live off campus, can I have a dining plan as well?
As a commuter, you can choose any dining plan you would like. There is also a Dining Dollar plan that is offered to students living off campus.
Can a freshman have a car on campus?
What if I don’t have a car? How can I get around?

When I’m not studying, what is there to do?
A lot! There’s always something to do on campus, including concerts, festivals, movies, Division I and club sports, and more.
