Program OverviewGlobal Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary degree-granting program in the Department of Transnational Studies that offers today's women and men courses in three areas: Cultures and Identities, Women and Global Citizenship, and Gender and Public Policy. The courses within each area recognize developing trends in studies of gender in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the United States. Our objectives include challenging our students to integrate local and global knowledge and to link theory and practice across a wide range of issues. A crucial component of the GGS curriculum is to acknowledge women's and men's diversity and to view people as active agents in their own societies and communities. Our courses analyze the many ways in which gender is affected by the intersectionality of race, class, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, geography, history, and religion. Our classes address issues of work; women's global citizenship; democracy and gender, global women's health, gender and violence, gender representations in art and media; and reinterpretations of social sciences and humanities through the lens of gender, race, sexuality, class, and ethnicity. Additionally, GGS encourages consideration of community service and activism as integral to a theoretic understanding of social consciousness/feminist engagement.
